WEST COLUMBIA, SC -- Brookland-Cayce High School will induct its newest Hall of Fame members next month.
Martha Herchak and Deputy Craig Stirewalt will be honored at the 19th Annual Brookland-Cayce High School Educator Hall of Fame Gala, set for February 6 at Seawell’s at the S.C. State Fairgrounds in Columbia.
Herchak was an educator in the South Carolina school system for 23 years, 21 of those at Brookland-Cayce High School, where she taught subjects including US history, world history and psychology. She was also a tennis coach for nearly 10 years. Students found her caring nature and dedication to their success to be an invaluable asset in the classroom. Herchak remains strong in her education roots even after her retirement in 2015 as an education coordinator at SC Department of Corrections’ Level 1 & 2 men’s prisons. She currently lives in Charleston.
Stirewalt, known as “Dep” to students, was much more than a School Resource Officer at Brookland-Cayce High School. He was an educator, friend and role model to many. Among the first SROs in South Carolina, he served at Brookland-Cayce for 14 years. Stirewalt also was a junior varsity football coach. He retired from law enforcement in 2015 after 34 years of service in Lexington County. He currently lives in Gilbert.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction, followed by the induction ceremony at 7. Tickets are $30 per person, $350 for a corporate-sponsored table. Seawell’s is at 1125 Rosewood Drive.
The Brookland-Cayce High School Foundation supports the school’s students through scholarships and other activities.
